American pickup trucks have a following in the UK for a reason. An F-150, Raptor, RAM, Silverado or Sierra offers a combination of size, specification and character that is difficult to duplicate with a normal European-market pickup.

The US market also gives buyers far more choice, but the truck needs to be selected with the complete UK journey in mind.

Choose the truck around how you will actually use it

Start with cab configuration, bed length, drivetrain, engine, towing requirements, trim and overall dimensions. A Raptor buyer has a very different brief from someone looking for a RAM 3500 Mega Cab or a classic squarebody Chevrolet.

Be specific about must-have equipment. American truck trims can vary enormously, and two vehicles that look almost identical in photographs may have very different options and values.

Used and very-low-mile trucks can open up the US market

Search the whole US market, not one dealer network

The right truck may be sitting with a franchised dealer, an independent specialist, a custom-truck dealer or a private owner. A nationwide search matters because specification and price can change dramatically by region.

For an exact truck, search by trim, option package, colour, mileage, drivetrain and location rather than accepting near matches that do not meet the brief.

Plan the landed number before committing

The asking price in America is only the starting point. The complete transaction can include US collection, inland transport, export handling, ocean freight and the UK-side taxes, customs, approval, registration or delivery costs that apply to the vehicle and quotation.

Working backwards from a maximum landed budget is usually a better way to shop than falling in love with a truck first and calculating the rest afterwards.
