Importing a Car from the USA to the UK: A Practical Guide for UK Buyers

Importing an American car into the UK is completely achievable, but the process involves more than finding a vehicle and booking a boat. The biggest mistakes normally happen before the car ever reaches the port: buying the wrong vehicle, trusting incomplete seller information, misunderstanding the title, or budgeting from the US purchase price alone.

This guide explains the practical USA-to-UK process and where United Exports Worldwide fits in. It is written for private UK buyers looking at American classics, muscle cars, pickups and modern US vehicles.

1. Start with the UK landed budget, not just the US asking price

A $25,000 vehicle in America is not a $25,000 vehicle in Britain. Before committing to a car, work backwards from the amount you are comfortable spending and allow for the vehicle, US collection, export and ocean freight, insurance where included, taxes and customs charges, plus any UK-side approval, registration, compliance or inland delivery that applies to your particular vehicle and quotation.

UEW quotations state what is included and excluded so the customer can judge the complete purchase rather than comparing only the seller's US asking price.

2. Find the right vehicle — and check the seller before sending money

The American market is enormous, which is both the attraction and the danger. Dealer inventory, Facebook Marketplace, specialist sites, private sellers and enthusiast groups can all produce good cars, but an attractive advert is not proof that the vehicle, title or seller is right.

Before proceeding, confirm as much as practical about the VIN, title status, seller identity, condition, location and history. For higher-value or older cars, detailed photographs, video and an independent inspection can be far cheaper than discovering rust, accident repairs or mechanical problems after the car arrives in Britain.

3. Agree the purchase and collect the correct documents

The exact paperwork varies with the vehicle and seller, but the ownership/title documents and purchase paperwork need to be correct before export. This is one reason buying remotely should be treated as a transaction process, not simply an online checkout.

UEW can communicate with the seller, coordinate the purchase process and arrange the US-side collection once the transaction is ready to proceed.

4. Move the vehicle to the US export point

America is a very large country. A vehicle bought in New York, Texas, Arizona or California can have a very different domestic transport requirement before it reaches the export facility. Whether the car runs and drives, its dimensions, value, collection location and whether open or enclosed transport is appropriate can all affect the move.

UEW coordinates US domestic transport as part of the agreed service where it is included in the written quotation.

5. Export and ocean shipping

Once the vehicle and export documents are ready, the car can be moved through the chosen US port or export facility and booked for shipment to the UK. The right method depends on the vehicle, route, schedule, dimensions and the level of protection required.

Do not make purchase decisions from a generic shipping price copied from an old forum post. Routes, carrier availability and associated charges change, so the shipment should be quoted for the actual vehicle and route.

6. UK customs, VAT and duty

HMRC states that VAT and customs duty may be payable when a vehicle is imported, and that the rates depend on the type of vehicle and where it is imported from. For a vehicle being shipped, the shipping company or customs agent will usually handle the import declaration and arrange payment at the UK border.

VAT can be calculated on more than the vehicle's purchase price alone, and reliefs can apply in particular circumstances. This is why UEW does not recommend relying on one blanket internet percentage for every vehicle and every buyer.

7. HMRC / NOVA

For a permanent UK import, HMRC must be notified and the tax position dealt with before registration. Current government guidance explains that the Notification of Vehicle Arrivals process, commonly called NOVA, forms part of getting the vehicle ready for DVLA registration.

8. Vehicle approval, MOT and compliance

A US vehicle may need approval before it can be registered. GOV.UK states that a non-EU vehicle can require Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA), while some vehicles — including certain older vehicles — may be exempt from approval. The exact requirement depends on the vehicle, age and circumstances.

Lighting, speedometer, fog-light and other compliance work can also depend on the vehicle and approval route. Do not assume that every American vehicle needs exactly the same conversion work.

9. Register the vehicle with DVLA

A vehicle brought into the UK permanently must be registered with DVLA. Current GOV.UK guidance says the importer needs the HMRC/NOVA position processed, any VAT and duty owed paid, and proof of vehicle approval where required before registration. Used imported vehicles are normally registered using the appropriate DVLA application and supporting documents.

What UEW actually does

  • Search the US market for the vehicle you want — vehicle sourcing itself is free.

  • Communicate with US sellers and dealerships.

  • Help review vehicle and seller information before you proceed.

  • Coordinate the purchase process on the US side.

  • Arrange US domestic collection and transport where included.

  • Coordinate export documentation and USA-to-UK shipping.

  • Give you a clear written quotation showing what is included and excluded.

UEW is British-owned and based in the USA. The point is simple: UK buyers have someone on the American side of the transaction rather than trying to manage a seller, transporter and exporter from thousands of miles away.

Already found a vehicle?

Send UEW the US listing before you commit. If you have not found the vehicle yet, tell us exactly what you want and your approximate landed budget and we can search the US market for you free of charge.

Important: UK taxes, customs treatment, approval and registration requirements can depend on the vehicle and the buyer's circumstances. Always use the current written quotation and current GOV.UK/HMRC/DVLA guidance for the specific transaction.
